Skálanes is a private sector and conservation centre located in East Iceland with a vision to create a place where the Icelandic environment and cultural history can be researched and interpreted at the same time as being a model for sustainable tourism. The reserve is roughly 1250 ha in size. The site is bounded by the sea on the north and east and by a continuation of similar land to the south and west. The coastline of along the northern edge of the site makes up the southern side of the sea mouth whilst the eastern section of coastline consists of sheer sea cliffs reaching up to 600 meters. The main types of habitat found on the reserve are: marine, intertidal, cliffs, riparian, fresh water wetlands, wet pasture, meadow, woodland communities, scree slopes and bare ground. This wealth of habitats provides niches for a rich biodiversity. There are at least 150 species of plants, 47 bird species and 4 Icelandic mammals many of which you will see whilst working within the reserve. There are many projects that need attention within the reserve and the following are currently of highest priority.

The following list covers items that volunteers are advised to bring.
Please Note: Skálanes is located in east Iceland and is in a very isolated part of the world, miles away from shops, towns etc. Participants have to be fit, happy to go without internet access and have the mental stamina to stay together at the centre for 4 weeks. The group will fly from an allocated UK airport to Keflavik International Airport (Reykjavik). From there they will get a domestic flight to Egilsstadir, East Iceland, where they will be met by the host partner and taken to Skálanes Heritage and Conservation centre. Leonardo da Vinci funding covers return flights to Iceland, travel insurance, accommodation and subsistence costs.
