The undergraduate archaeology placement in Germany is organized by Peter Kaiser at Dubener Heide Naturpark and hosted by Landesamt für Denkmalspflege und Archäologie Sachsen Anhalt (The State of Conservation and Archaeology of Saxony Anhalt) based in Halle, Germany. Landesamt für Denkmalspflege und Archäologie is a public body that provides archaeological services including rescue projects, excavation/survey and building conservation within the German state of Saxony Anhalt. Dr Thomas Weber at Landesamt für Denkmalspflege und Archäologie Sachsen Anhalt will be responsible for the UK group and the six-week archaeology programme.

The six-week placement aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and experience of working on a variety of rescue excavations within the vicinity of Magdeburg. Magdeburg is the regional capital city of Saxony-Anhalt and dates to 805AD. It has an incredible array of monuments that serve as reminders of its turbulent history. The townscape has been shaped by Magdeburg's cultural heritage and features historical monuments, as well as the massive buildings dating from the period of communist town planning.

Working with a unit has allowed past EASE groups to work on a variety of sites. In 2010, the group was separated into groups working on the Neolithic excavation (Megalithic tomb and fortified settlement) of Kiel University in Hundisburg and the other in Haldensleben (Medieval settlement - going daily with the excavation leader from Magdeburg to Haldensleben) and Magdeburg city centre, which involved a research excavation in Magdeburg Cathedral and a rescue excavation of Medieval settlements in the town centre.

In 2011, the placement was divided between the rescue excavation of a Medieval cemetery located in the village of Domersleben and again on a research led excavation by the University of Kiel, of a LBK site near Hundisburg.

For 2012, the group will be once again divided between sites to be confirmed by the Unit at a later stage.

Accommodation

The group will be housed in the Europäisches Bildungswerk für Beruf und Gesellschaft (EBG) hostel in Magdeburg. This is a self catering hostel.

The group will work Monday-Friday under supervision on their allocated site with free time (unsupervised) in the evenings and weekends.

Excursions
The group will get the opportunity to visit significant archaeological sites within the region of Saxony-Anhalt arranged by Dr Thomas Weber. Places of interest that the group may wish to visit independently by train on free weekends include Hannover, Dessau, Berlin and Leipzig.
