European Archaeology Skills Exchange Funded Placements

EASE 2010

All Ease 2010 Placements are now full, however we are still accepting applications from undergraduates for our reserve list. Should accepted participants withdraw from the Ease programme, applicants on the reserve list will be contacted immediately.

Background Information

Grampus Heritage began promoting the Leonardo da Vinci project 'Excavation Centred Training in European Archaeology' (ECTEA) in 2000. This very successful project, written and managed by Grampus Heritage and funded by the Leonardo programme, enabled us to fund over 80 archaeology students from the UK to join a range of excavations across Europe. In 2003, encouraged by the success of the ECTEA project, Grampus and our European archaeology partners designed and submitted the Ease project. Thanks to funding from the EU Leonardo da Vinci programme, we have been able to offer practical placements for UK archaeology undergraduate students and graduates to join archaeological projects across Europe. Since the beginning of the programme, Grampus Heritage has sent over 200 students from the UK to work in Iceland, Finland, Slovakia, Portugal, Bulgaria, Germany and Finland. The Ease 2010 placements will again take place during the summer break to ensure that as many students as possible have the option of taking part. All Ease placements in 2010 will be for the duration of 6 weeks, except Portugal which is for 5 weeks.

Eligibility and How to Apply

The European Archaeology Skills Exchange placement is open to archaeology (or related subject) undergraduates (first and second year students only) enrolled at a UK university, who wish to gain basic archaeological excavation or post-excavation fieldwork across Europe. Participants must have a permanent UK address and are required to attend the full placement duration. To apply participants are required to complete the application form and return it by post to Grampus Heritage along with a written reference (preferably by a lecturer or employer) and a copy of the participants' passport photo-page. Please read and complete the application carefully. There is no strict submission deadline for this programme as we receive, review and allocate places to successful applicants until placements are filled. The website is regularly updated so placements will be specified as full as and when this happens. Why not contact us to express your interest or to discuss placement availability either via email at enquiries@grampusheritage.co.uk or telephone on 016973 21516.

PLEASE NOTE: Third and final year undergraduates and recent graduates are only eligible to apply for Grease placements.

All applicants should be aware that they are joining excavations planned and managed by organisations in the host country. The EASE placements offer a 'real-work environment' experience, with the necessary guidance and supervision provided by the host partners. Applicants should be aware that approaches to archaeological research and excavation do vary across Europe and all participants should therefore expect to experience differences in methodology and techniques. Participants are expected to become part of a team and to ultimately make a meaningful contribution to the host project.

In addition to the archaeological work and experience, participants will have the opportunity to carry out cultural visits and during free evenings and weekends to gain a broader experience of the host country and culture. All applicants should be aware that Ease placements involve a degree of physical work! Participants will be required to complete an online questionnaire based on their experience, issued via email by our funders from the EU Leonardo da Vinci scheme. All participants will also be accredited with a certificate by the European host partner demonstrating the archaeological experience they have gained throughout the course of the programme.

EU Leonardo da Vinci Funding

Ease placements are funded by the EU Leonardo da Vinci scheme which covers return flights (travel from a major UK airport designated by Grampus), travel insurance, accommodation (basic and arranged by host partners) and a subsistence allowance (equal to three meals a day). Flights and travel insurance are booked by Grampus Heritage in the UK and tickets are then posted out to participants. Where participants are travelling from Northern Ireland, Grampus Heritage will endeavour to arrange the necessary connecting flights. All placements involve a group of at least four students from the UK travelling together.
