Training In Contemporary Applications of Traditional European Crafts (TICATEC) - 2008

FULL Cyprus - Akrotiri Environmental Centre

Number of UK participants: 8

Placement Dates: 16th June to 20th July 2008

Placement duration: 5 weeks

The focus of the placement will be basketry and weaving with natural materials (incl rushes and grasses). Tasks being undertaken by participants include:

- Identification of possible handicraft design modifications which will not change the character of the handicrafts, but they will make them more saleable in the modern market. This concept is at the heart of the TICATEC project and is an excellent opportunity for participants to consider ways in which traditional skills, design and crafts can be given more contemporary value and relevance.

- Helping of local people to make arrangements in their houses and yards to facilitate visitor groups, e.g. benches, signs etc.

- Practical making of basketry items.

- Website design for Akrotiri basketry, and identification of other ways to advertise basketry to attract visitors.

The Akrotiri environmental centre houses an exhibition of traditional basket weaving and the traditional uses of items made in Cyprus from the weaving of natural materials. Beneficiaries will receive training and guidance from experienced craft practitioners. The aim is not only to develop skills in weaving techniques and basket making but also to consider the value of the cultural tradition and how this can be given more contemporary meaning in both Cyprus and the UK. In addition to the practical work, beneficiaries will also have plenty of opportunities to explore the beautiful island of Cyprus.

The plaement could be suitable for a wide range of UK trainees, including those studying courses in crafts and floristry.
