Training in Contemporary Application of Traditional European Crafts TICATEC 2013
4-week Funded Placements
Background Information
Ticatec grew out of the EU programme 'Training of People in
Heritage and Traditional Skills' written by Grampus Heritage in 2004. The
Training in Contemporary Application of Traditional European Crafts (Ticatec)
placement focuses on the significance of re-introducing European traditional
crafts that are at risk of being lost forever with an ever-increasing technically
advanced society. Rural skills workers form a comparatively small and shrinking
proportion of the rural workforce. Since the late nineteenth century, many
skills have become extinct or have shrunk to a fraction of their former size
and importance. Rural skills and trades play a key role in the leisure, recreation,
construction and tourism industries. They help to preserve and maintain the
historic environment and service the lifestyle needs of green consumers and
country dwellers: they add diversity to the rural economies at a time when
the land-based industries are in decline; they are a creative outlet for those
wanting an alternative lifestyle in the rural environment. The Ticatec initiative
is of great importance to the sustainability of the traditional rural industries
and has enabled over 300 students from the UK to participate on placements
in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Ireland and Romania.
Eligibility and How to Apply
The Training in Contemporary Application of Traditional European Crafts programme is open to students in initial vocational training enrolled at a UK college or university, who wish to gain experience of rich and varied traditional skills which exist throughout Europe. Participants must also have a permanent UK address and are required to attend the full placement duration. To apply participants are required to complete the application form and return it by post to Grampus Heritage along with a written reference (preferably by a lecturer or employer) and a copy of the participants' passport photo-page. Please read and complete the application carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. There is no strict submission deadline for this programme as we receive, review and allocate places to successful applicants until placements are filled. The website is regularly updated so placements will be specified as full as and when this happens. Why not contact us to express your interest or to discuss placement availability either via email at enquiries@grampusheritage.co.uk or telephone on 016973 21516.
In addition to the work experience, participants will have
the opportunity to carry out cultural visits and will have free evenings and
weekends to gain a broader experience of the host country and culture. Participants
will also be required complete an online questionnaire issued by our funders
from the EU Leonardo da Vinci scheme, based on their experience which should
be submitted to Grampus Heritage after returning to the UK. Upon completion
of the placement, all participants will be issued with a certificate by the
European host partner to demonstrate the work experience they have gained
throughout the course of the programme.
EU Leonardo da Vinci Funding
All placements are funded by the EU Leonardo da Vinci scheme which covers return flights (travel from a major UK airport designated by Grampus), travel insurance, accommodation (basic and arranged by host partners) and a subsistence allowance (equal to three meals a day). Flights and travel insurance are booked by Grampus Heritage in the UK and tickets are then posted out to participants. Where participants are travelling from Northern Ireland, Grampus Heritage will endeavour to arrange the necessary connecting flights.
