FULL-Mask making & Icon painting - Romania Dates: 1st to 29th August 2010 Number of UK Participants: 6 Duration: 4 weeks
Background Information The Romania placement is hosted by "Satul verde", an organization that works in traditional skills, cultural heritage, arts, environment and nature conservation. The placement is located in Sibiu (central Romania), whereby participants will be given the opportunity to learn about Romanian traditional mask-making and glass icon-painting. These crafts have been subject to a period of revival in the last few years, so this placement will enable participants to work in a local workshop with skilled local craftswomen to produce original masks and glass icons. Placement Structure for 2010 The first week of the placement will start with a short introduction to the Romanian traditional art. A couple of days will be dedicated to gathering materials, and then participants will be introduced to the basic techniques of mask making and glass icon painting. In the second and third week participants will focus on mask making & icon painting as well as experiment in making jewelry and accessories using wool, hemp, bones, horns. Participants will spend the fourth week in the "Astra" Village Museum, where they will work and exhibit their masks and icons with Romanian participants at the "Festival of Traditional Crafts" in Sibiu.
Participants will be accommodated in Sibiu (the 2007 European Capital of Culture), a city located in the middle of Romania. They will work from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with half an hour for lunch. Participants will be provided lunch, but are requested to cook their own breakfast & dinner. During weekends, participants will have a cultural programme which includes visits to the mountains & Saxon villages surrounding Sibiu, Bruckenthal Museum, and the Village Museum. There will also be visits to the town of Alba Iulia and the medieval town of Sighisoara.
