PEATS Cyprus Conservation and Ecotourism

There will be a rental vehicle made available to this group, however, driver’s should ideally be aged 25 or over. There must be a minimum of 2 drivers.

The content revolves around nature conservation and eco-tourism type works undertaken by our partners, Hylates Limited. The emphasis of the placement is on sustainable and local solutions to maintaining and improving biodiversity. Cyprus has a very fragile natural environment, which is under pressure for development purposes. Hylates Ltd deals with local authorities and individuals, for the development of environmentally friendly facilities to attract visitors, such trails, picnic sites, visitor centres etc. Participants will have the opportunity to be involved in the design, construction and operation of such facilities.

General and site information:

Participants will stay and work in Limassol district, with some visits in other districts. Limassol extends from sea level to almost two thousand meters a.s.l., and is very rich in natural and cultural features. During the placement period no or very minor rainfall is expected. Temperatures are likely to reach 38 OC during the hottest days, and generally temperatures above 30 OC are expected. Work will be undertaken 5 days per week and weekends will be free. Vehicles may be made available to the group, so some applicants ideally need to be 25 or over and hold a clean UK drivers licence.

Please note: accommodation is a self-catering guesthouse with one bedroom for the female participants and one bedroom for the male participants.

Itinerary and arrangements:

1st week

  • Arrival at airport, transfer to accommodation place in Limassol area.
  • Health and Safety induction, risk assessment, vehicle arrangements, discussion about the programme. Local introduction. Greek language lesson (4 hours).
  • Maintenance of a nature trail at Koilani and Phini villages, Limassol (3 days).

2nd week

  • Greek language lesson (2 hours).
  • Visit to Avakas Gorge and Akamas Peninsula protected area.
  • Visit to Kykko monastery, and Paphos forest protected area. See the endemic moufflon, the endemic golden oak and the Cedar valley.
  • Maintenance of a nature trail and view-point at Amargeti and Miliou villages, Paphos (3 days).

3rd week

  • Greek language lesson (2 hours).
  • Visit to Troodos National Forest Park. Visit to Troodos Visitor Centre. Walk of nature trail. Visit to Amiantos mines to see the restoration work, botanic gardens and Troodos Geopark visitor centre.
  • Visit to Athalassa National Park and Visitor Centre. Visit to Nicosia old town.
  • Maintenance of an existing nature trail and view-point at Agios Theodoros village, Limassol (3 days).

4th week

  • Bird ringing demonstration. Visit to a herbarium. Greek language lesson (2 hours).
  • Visit Oroklini Lake to see the wetland’s management actions and do birdwatching. Visit to Cape Greco National park and visitor centre.
  • Visit to Anoyira village, Stalies biological farm, carob museum. Visit to Kourion archeological site and Kolossi castle.
  • Visit to Akrotiri area, to the visitor centre, Akrotiri wetlands Ramsar site, and turtle nesting beach.
  • Visit to Limassol medieval castle and Limassol district museum. Evaluation of the program and certificates award and Europasses. Departure arrangements.

Accommodation and transport:

– In self-catering apartment (with shared bedrooms – on for males, one for females) in Limassol district. Bedding material will be provided (bed sheets and pillows). Washing machine will be available.

– Participants will be collected and taken to the airport

– Company and/or rented cars will be used during the action

Other Information:

–  Internet will be available.

–  Postal services are available in the village.

–  ATM will be available at a distance of 5-10 minutes from accommodation place

–  Power supply plugs are the same as UK.

–  June/July are hot months, so sun cream and a hat are needed. Also an insect repellent is recommended.

– Any drivers in the group will need to take their licence


The EU Erasmus + funding will cover return UK flights, insurance, accommodation and food. Participants will need extra funds for personal purchases and excursions.
