NEW: PEATS Spain – Street art and mask making in Catalonia

This placement is managed and hosted by the Riba Rocks non-profit association, supporting the partner organisation Amics de Riba-roja d’Ebre (Friends of Riba-roja d’Ebre).

The placement will take place in Riba-roja d’Ebre, 2 hrs west of Barcelona in the mountainous area along the River Ebro in Catalonia.

Itinerary

The 2022 itinerary will include:

  • Art: art in streets – As part of the Riba Rocks Riu d’art Open Air Gallery, you will participate in a collaborative mural in the streets of the village. Working with local artist Sarah Misselbrook to create a large scale wall based artwork based on local inspiration.
  • Land Art workshop with local artist focussing on connections with nature, environmental sustainability and art in place, including making our own charcoal on the campfire.
  • 5 session workshop creating a placement diary with local illustrator Roser Gay
  • 5 session ‘Cap Grossos’ Paper maché mask workshop with local artist Isabel Torres
  • Ecological bread making at the local Bakery
  • Workshop at local honey producer
  • Informal Catalan conversation lessons
  • Conservation activities at local nature reserve with Grup de Natura Freixe
  • Learning about the history of the olive tree and traditional farming techniques in the ancient olive grove of Riba Rocks

The placement will include visits to Sebes nature reserve, a Juniper oven, local Civil war trenches, hiking and foraging in the mountains of Catalonia, a visit to Horta de Sant Juan Picasso museum, the Gaudí interactive museum in Reus, the village of Corbera d’Ebre with multiple land art installations, a guided tour of the Riu d’art open air gallery featuring over 30 works by local and international artists, kayaking on the River Ebro as well as visits to the local churches of Berrus and Santa Madrona.

Flights to Reus or Barcelona

Accommodation: Shared static home on an off-grid, ecological, traditional olive finca (farm).

Meals: Breakfast and lunch provided in accommodation, family style dinners as well as meals in local tapas restaurants and community meals.

Communication: High speed fiber-optic wifi available free of charge at local bars, also desks available at the local co-working office, wide spread 4G available in the village, check with mobile network for coverage. Unlimited 4G wifi available on the olive farm.
Transport: Transfers from Reus Airport available and trains run from Barcelona El Prat Airport three times a day. A local pool car available to assigned driver over 25 with 2 years UK driving licence.
Weather: May can be changeable, with temperatures in the mid-twenties. Rain is a probability, although it will be generally warmer than the UK.

 

Funding

The placement is funded by the EU Erasmus + scheme and covers return flights, accommodation, car hire costs and a subsistence allowance.
